Stephen Stills, I think, is the
most underrated singer/songwriter/musician of the past three decades. A
musical genius associated with such eminently notable bands as Crosby Stills
& Nash and Buffalo Springfield, we here see Stills at an early 80's
Crosby Stills & Nash (CSN) show.
Born
in 1945 in Dallas, TX, Stills, who's family moved often, also spent childhood
years in Louisiana, Florida and various locations in Central America--thus
his roots in the Blues and Latin-flavored music.
Stills is here seen in another early
80's shot.
Later
in the same show as above, Stills concentrates on a typically complex yet
fluid, stylistic guitar solo. Lately, Stills has gotten his long-deserved
critical acclaim by being the first musician in history to be inducted
into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame twice in the same year--as a member
of both the Buffalo Springfield and of Crosby Stills & Nash. And if
you missed the live Real Audio induction ceremony web broadcast, I hope
you've caught the ceremony highlights on VH-1.
If you've never heard Stephen Stills
play the guitar, you haven't heard the guitar being played. Virtuoso keyboardist
Michael Finnegan, longtime sideman and friend of Stills, once said it well:
"Stills can play the blues as well as he wants to."

In
the same late-80s show as pictured above, Stills cradles one of his many
beloved Martin Guitars and lets an open chord impeccably reverberate before
continuing with a dazzling solo during his classic "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes".
Later in this late-80's show and to the
delight of his adoring fans, Stills burns through a captivating electric guitar
solo.
In 2001 at the Fleet Center Pavilion in Boston, Stills' guitar mastery soared to new heights.
The stuff legends are made of, Stephen Stills, now nearly 70, yet ever-energetically and masterfully performs.
Coming soon--a collection of my photos from a 2001 Crosby
Stills & Nash show in Boston to which I was invited as their photographer.
